چکیده

We have developed a technique which allows optical absorption measurements to be made using a pulsed light source and offers a sensitivity significantly greater than that attained using stabilized continuous light sources. The technique is based upon the measurement of the rate of absorption rather than the magnitude of absorption of a light pulse confined within a closed optical cavity. The decay of the light intensity within the cavity is a simple exponential with loss components due to mirror loss, broadband scatter (Rayleigh, Mie), and molecular absorption. Narrowband absorption spectra are recorded by scanning the output of a pulsed laser (which is injected into the optical cavity) through an absorption resonance. We have demonstrated the sensitivity of this technique by measuring several bands in the very weak forbidden b Σg X Σg transition in gaseous molecular oxygen. Absorptions signals of less than 1 part in 10 can be detected.

Cavity ring down dye laser spectroscopy of jet-cooled metal clusters: Cu2 and Cq

Direct optical absorption measurements ofjet-cooled metal clusters formed in a pulsed molecular beam have been made using a sensitive new absorption technique employing pulsed laser sources. Metal clusters and other metal containing species have been observed in this initial study. Absorption measurements of the Cu, ‘A;-‘E’ system reveal strong intensities for vibronic bands seen only weakly in...

Aerosol Optical Extinction Measurements Using a Pulsed Laser

A recently developed portable instrument, the pulsed cavity ring-down transmissometer/nephelometer tandem (CRDT/N) allows for the in situ measurement of optical properties of aerosols. An Nd:YAG laser excited CRDT (λ = 532, 1064 nm) is shown to be capable of sensitively measuring the aerosol extinction coefficient (bext) at the two wavelengths simultaneously. Adding a nephelometer yields a meas...

Trace Gas Analysis by Pulsed Laser Absorption Spectroscopy

Optical absorption measurements of trace level (ppb) pollutants in ambient air samples and chemical reaction products in laboratory flow reactors have been made using a new technique employing pulsed laser sources. This new technique allows optical absorption measurements to be made using either broad band or narrow band pulsed lasers and offers a temporal resolution and absorption detection se...

Pound-Drever-Hall-locked, frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectrometer.

We describe a high sensitivity and high spectral resolution laser absorption spectrometer based upon the frequency-stabilized cavity ring-down spectroscopy (FS-CRDS) technique. We used the Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) method to lock the probe laser to the high-finesse ring-down cavity. We show that the concomitant narrowing of the probe laser line width leads to dramatically increased ring-down even...

Simultaneous measurement of quality factor and wavelength shift by phase shift microcavity ring down spectroscopy.

Optical resonant microcavities with ultra high quality factors are widely used for biosensing. Until now, the primary method of detection has been based upon tracking the resonant wavelength shift as a function of biodetection events. One of the sources of noise in all resonant-wavelength shift measurements is the noise due to intensity fluctuations of the laser source. An alternative approach ...
